Simarouba glauca is native to Florida, Bahamas, the Greater Antilles (Cuba, Hispaniola, Jamaica), Mexico and Central America. It is an evergreen tree up to 12-15 m in height and 30 cm in diameter. The leaves are alternate, odd-pinnately compound, with 10-20 leaflets. The leaflets are oblong to oblong-obovate, 5-10 cm long, dark green above, lighter below. The flowers are arranged in terminal and axillary panicles; 5 greenish sepals, 5 unfused ovate yellowish-white petals. The fruit is black drupe.
